My Apple iPod Touch 4G

Last Saturday, I got my Apple iPod Touch 4G 32GB. I won't post the specs and the complete set of features anymore. What I really like in this device is the Retina display. I've tried 1G, 2G, and 3G versions, and the display of 4G is really different because I can't see the pixels anymore. It matters because it helps me read texts. The new processor allows faster processing, although the memory remains to be 256MB. Not really a big deal for me, considering that I usually focus on a particular app most of the time. The cameras (front and back) are not excellent when compared to smartphones today, but at least the 4Gs have them. I'll outline some of the features I want for future iPod Touches. Below is a screenshot of my iPod Touch unit. I just learned that pressing the home button and the power button will capture a screenshot.

  1. A compass like the one in iPhone

  2. A better camera with flash

  3. New design that will make the steel casing and screen less prone to scratches and fingerprint marks

  4. FM and AM radio capabilities

  5. Ability to access Internet from the computer connected through USB, without using WiFi (useful for those without WAP at home, and ad-hoc is a hassle)

  6. Ability to sync calendar and mail using USB cable with Google or at least with Windows Live Mail or Thunderbird

Expect the usual improvements in future releases like: more powerful CPU, higher amount of memory, thinner and smaller in size, lighter in weight, and even better pricing options. We can also hope that Apple will allow users to expand the storage size and replace the battery by themselves. Fans will be happier if Apple gives an even better quality ear phones. Advanced features like fingerprint reading can be made possible, perhaps by the 10th generation device? I'm also thinking if the back of the device can be attached to refrigerators like a magnet.

I'm also disappointed with some software issues. Pressing the home button will not terminate the app. This means users have to go to the app switch mode by pressing the button twice, and manually close those apps by themselves. I know Apple will say it's not necessary when iOS will close them when the memory space is running out. Still, it's not so convenient and not ideal for us to see all our apps present in the list. I suggest that Apple should either show the close button without users having to hold the app icon, or have a button like "Close All". Triple pressing the button can also serve to indicate that current app should be closed. This signal is reserved for opening the accessibility options. The calendar handles events but not to-dos. I hope they can integrate it with the calendar.

Overall, I'm happy with this device, considering that I am able to do what I want especially for reading and listening to audio. I don't really intend to use this device for gaming or surfing the Internet. I really intend to use it for reading books and listening to sermons; these things which I find hard to do using laptops, when I'm either distracted or having physical discomforts. I hope this gadget can last long and help me with my needs and task organization as well.
