I'm currently using the Dell Vostro laptop which Datacraft gave to us. Last October 2, I transferred all my files from my Asus Laptop to the new one. I was thinking of an efficient way of transferring more than 30GB of files. The issue was not limited to the file size, but also in the number of files to be transferred. If they were just 10 big files, it would be simple, but there were many small files involved. I decided to make a network transfer, since our portable hard drive has only few free space remaining.
I created a shared folder in my new laptop, and copied all my files from my old laptop to the new one. It was slow. Windows estimated the entire process to take at least 2 hours, with a very low file transfer rate. This is partly because of the mass number of files involved. I guessed it would be faster if it only involved writing a single 30GB file. I stopped the transfer, and tried some tools which allow faster file copying. I remembered Microsoft's Robocopy which does multithreaded copying, but I chose Microsoft's RichCopy instead, which has also been a popular and more modern alternative. The tools are too granular and powerful, but I didn't really need such complex tool, and I didn't have much time to study the options and parameters to set. I settled with another similar tool called Teracopy which also has "pause and resume file transfer" feature. The interface is much simpler, and the copy process was also fast. Unlike in Windows copy, these tools will try to suppress all interruptions. All files which had failed or had problems in copying are logged instead.
